One of the most important decisions we can make in our lifetime is who to spend it with.
In a culture where divorce rates hover around 40% for first marriages and go up with each sequential marriage it is critical that couples learn the skills that lead to happy marriage. Divorce rates are two and a half times higher now than they were even just 20 years ago!
Fortunately a great deal of research has been done on what predicts divorce amongst couples, as well as what skills help couples to stay happy and stay together. And these skills can be learned! Just as a person can learn to speak a new language they can learn new relationship skills. But just like learning a new language, it goes easier with a good teacher and lots of practice.
Premarital counseling is aimed at assessing the skills that you have already gained as a couple and pointing out areas that may still need improvement. Missing or weak skills are then practiced and reinforced in sessions so that they become easier, faster and more fluid.
Assessing each of your attachment styles will also help us to predict some of the ways in which you may run into problems later on, and help you learn how to avert these dormant problems before they become triggered.
In my opinion the best time for a couple to see me is before they marry! This avoids accumulating months or more likely years of misunderstandings, mistakes and un-repaired wounds that can eventually wear down the love that brought you together.
I am happy to provide a free consultation for couples considering pre-marital counseling with me. I believe that marriage can be the most rewarding thing you ever do as a person and I look forward to helping you create a strong, healthy and lasting bond with your partner.
*Please note that Dr. Jordan is using the term "marriage" to represent a life-time commitment to someone that you love. It is not meant to be exclusive of opposite-sex couples or of non-legally recognized unions. If you are a same-sex couple preparing to make a lifetime commitment then pre "marital" counseling is also for you!
