Often when we think of therapy we imagine going in to a therapists office and just starting to talk.
And that is often how therapy begins. However, much like going to the doctor’s office, sometimes getting an accurate “diagnosis” of the problem requires more than just talking. Medical doctors use procedures such as blood work or x-rays to help them figure out what the problem is and what to do about it. Similarly there are psychological tests that can be used to help figure out where couples are stuck as well as what the personality styles are of each member of the couple.
Testing can bring more information to light quickly to help us get traction faster in the therapy process. This allows us to create a road map including areas of problems, areas of strength, where you and your partner are now and where you both need to go. I also often repeats some tests at various intervals to track progress. This can give a couple a great sense of how far they have come and what remains to be tackled in the work.
There are many types of psychological tests that can be used to help couples learn about each other and their relationship. Some of the tools that I frequently use include the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, 2nd Edition (MMPI-2), the Thematic Apperception Test, Diane Poole Heller's Attachment Style's Quiz and the Partner Attachment Inventory. These tests allow me to learn a lot about a couple in a short period of time, expediting the early phase of therapy.
While testing may sound intimidating, I strive to make it collaborative and comfortable. I will explain the results of testing both in an in-person feedback session as well as with a written feedback letter. In all of my years of practice I have received only positive feedback about the impact of testing on the therapy.
If you have questions about using testing to facilitate your therapy I would be happy to discuss them with you. I look forward to helping you and your partner learn more about yourselves and your relationship so that you can achieve your goals as a couple.
