Welcome to my practice. I am a licensed and board certified clinical psychologist with over 20 years experience helping people to heal and achieve their goals.
As a psychologist and also as an individual I believe in relationships. I am passionate about helping couples fall in love again and set their relationship on a course for enduring happiness. I work with many problems faced by couples, including but not limited to:
Who can benefit from couples therapy?
Some couples are just starting to have problems and others are thinking this may be the end of the relationship. Regardless of where you are in your struggles with each other my goal is to help you understand how you got where you are and what, if anything can be done to put the relationship back on track. If you are a new couple it can be invaluable to learn about the hallmarks of healthy relationships so that you can avert trouble in the future. If you have been together longer you can still learn how to change longstanding patterns and improve the health of your relationship.
What if we have already tried couples counseling?
If you have tried couples therapy or know someone who has, and found that it didn't seem to help, don't worry. Couples therapy can be practiced in many different ways. I practice a style of couples therapy known as a "Psychobiological Approach Couples Therapy" or PACT. This is a relatively new approach that is quite different from traditional couples therapy. Developed by Dr. Stan Tatkin, an associate professor at UCLA, this approach uses what we understand about two very important areas of psychology (neurobiology and attachment) to lead the couples therapy process. The fields of neurobiology and attachment are two of the fastest growing and most influential areas of psychology at this time. Ongoing research in both areas is helping us to better understand the human brain and how it forms and maintains relationships with others. For a more detailed description of PACT see the page titled "Psychobiological Approach to Couples Therapy". Couples who have worked with me often tell me that my sessions using this approach have been far more helpful than other styles they have tried. I have found this approach to relationships to provide not only the "intellectual" information that people need to change but also the vitally important emotional and experiential piece that really helps to make the changes "stick".
How can we tell if couples or marital therapy will help us?
The best predictor of success in therapy is the "fit" between the client(s) and the therapist. I believe that it is vitally important that your therapist is someone you BOTH feel comfortable with. For this reason I offer a free 30-minute consultation with you and your partner so that you can both have a chance to see whether or not you think you would be comfortable working with me. If you are interested in psychotherapy please email me or call my office to set up a consultation appointment. I have both evening and Saturday hours for your convenience in Austin and my associates also offer appointments in the Round Rock office.
